AAM: The Power of Language Choice in Activism

« Watching What We Say: The Power of Language Choice in Activism

Are your words working against you? As activists, our language choices can be our greatest asset, or our most self-defeating liability. Perhaps in our efforts to make veganism “approachable,” we compromise our convictions and soften our ethics. Perhaps to “wake people up,” we become aggressive and polarizing—we wonder how they’re not “getting it” when to us it’s so painfully clear. This talk will address the power and importance of language in activism, and discuss how to walk the line of staying firm in your convictions and uncompromising in your message, while still helping people lower their guard enough to listen, hear, and make the connection.

Guest Speaker, Emily Moran Barwick is an animal-liberation activist, educator, writer, artist, and international speaker. Emily founded Bite Size Vegan upon the belief that everyone deserves access to solid, factual information on issues impacting their health, our planet, society, and the lives of other sentient beings. Through, Emily provides free educational videos, essays, eCourses, and resources on all aspects of veganism—helping people go vegan and equipping existing vegans with the tools they need to get active. Communication has never come easily to Emily—an Autistic—but she credits her Autism for her deep and empathetic connection with non-human animals, and believes that by seeing the world differently, she’s better able to help others begin to think differently.

This workshop will be held on Zoom. Link to be posted as the date approaches. Check back righ here. »
